Our in-house vehicle data API — one endpoint for everything about a vehicle: specs, history, valuation, MOT and registration lookups, served fast from a VIN or plate.
The brief
Across dealer, insurance and fleet projects we kept integrating different patchy sources for vehicle data — specs here, history there, valuations somewhere else — each with its own format and gaps. We wanted one clean API that answered any question about a vehicle from a single VIN or registration.
What we built
VdbAPI is a unified vehicle data API: pass a VIN or number plate and get structured specs, trim and options, ownership and mileage history, MOT and inspection records, recalls, and market valuation in one response. A normalisation layer reconciles dozens of sources into one consistent schema, results are cached for sub-80ms lookups, and a self-serve portal handles keys, OpenAPI docs and usage — with AI-assisted matching to resolve messy or partial inputs.
The outcome
VdbAPI now indexes 400M+ vehicles and serves 1.1B+ calls a month at under 80ms per lookup. Products that once juggled five vehicle data providers now call one endpoint, and the data finally agrees with itself.
